This has been an unpaid advertisement by Russ the Librarian! Hey, if you're going to plug SKL's book on my site, tell her I want a cut.

I haven't read the book yet. But Susan Faludi's STIFFED (as well as Gilligan's book) shows how patriarchy stifles and distorts men as well as women, usually unawares. It's not so much about this group oppressing this one as all of us living within a paradigm inimical to the very basic pleasure and joy of being our authentic selves and relating from that place. The requisite hierarchies in a patriarchal world are built upon the will to power, and as Jung said, where the will to power is paramount, love is lacking.

I'm working on a post that will elaborate some more on this topic as it's come up a lot for me lately.

You read SEX AND BACON yet? It addresses a lot of these issues, but I think what's most admirable is how much time she doesn't spend talking about oppressors. She is unapologetic about her appetites, and has written extensively on the subject. Where does that kind of self-assurance and stability come from? I'm often told I have a very good sense of myself, and I'm not sure why.
